Like New Orleans in the United States, Klaipėda is the Lithuanian cradle of classic jazz. Lithuania's only port city is a true harbor of cultural transformation, always the first to sense new trends in art and music. Inspired by global musical winds, the historic jazz ensemble "Klaipėdos diksilendas" was formed here in 1978. The group soon became one of the most popular and significant classic jazz ensembles in Lithuania, uniting experienced, distinctive and vivid jazz masters of the country. Distinguished by a deep feel for the jazz styles it performed, precise and professional interpretation, and artistry, and having changed its name several times over four decades, the group returned to the big stage in 2016 as the Klaipėda Dixieland "Memeland". The work of the group's first founder, Pranciškus Narušis (who also founded the Department of Popular Music at the LVK Klaipėda Faculties), was this time carried on by Klaipėda-born saxophonist Laimonas Urbikas. The new stage in the legendary ensemble's history was inspired by L. Urbikas's wish and aim to bring together traditional jazz lovers for exceptional concerts. At the core of the Dixieland is long-standing band member drummer Edmundas Federavičius, who joined the group back in 1985. The new ensemble presents its concert programs together with the most renowned vocalists. This time, the charismatic Kristina Jatautaitė — titled the best soloist in Klaipėda — will lend her voice.
