Glass Quarter

The Glass Quarter is a small but exceptionally atmospheric part of Vilnius Old Town, where the city reveals itself through narrow streets, cozy courtyards, historic buildings, and small, carefully discovered details. The Quarter stretches between Stiklių, Gaono, Žydų, and M. Antokolskis streets, right in the heart of the Old Town, just a few minutes' walk from Town Hall Square. This place has a history spanning over 600 years. Once, artisans, goldsmiths, glassblowers, merchants, and the Jewish community lived and worked here. In 1495, the goldsmiths' guild was established in this part of Vilnius, and in the 16th century, the first glass manufactory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania operated here. It is from this history that the name of Stiklių street originated. The Glass Quarter is also closely connected with Jewish Vilnius. Žydų street and the surrounding alleys were once an important part of Jewish cultural, religious, and daily life. Nearby stood the Great Synagogue of Vilnius, and there were shops, workshops, schools, and community institutions. Today, this history is recalled by street names, memorial plaques, and the monument dedicated to the Vilna Gaon. It's worth strolling through the Quarter unhurriedly. Visit Stiklių street, explore Gaono and Žydų streets, look for hidden courtyards, historic facades, old arches, and small architectural details. In the courtyard at Stiklių g. 4, you can find the “Metraštininkas” (Chronicler) sculpture, associated with the history of Vilnius printing and the memory of Francysk Skaryna. Other courtyards hide galleries, restaurant terraces, small shops, and tranquil Old Town spaces. Today, the Glass Quarter is a vibrant urban space where history blends with modern Vilnius. Here you'll find jewelry workshops, local designer shops, art galleries, cozy cafes, and restaurants. The Quarter is especially appealing to those who seek not only the most famous sights of Vilnius but also more authentic city experiences. The Glass Quarter is beautiful in all seasons. In summer, outdoor cafes and flower-adorned streets beckon; in autumn, a calmer Old Town mood prevails; and in winter, the Quarter becomes one of the coziest places for a stroll, when shop windows, lights, and decorations create an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. It's a perfect place for a short stop during the day, a romantic evening stroll, a coffee break, dinner, or a leisurely exploration of Vilnius Old Town.
