Signatories House (The House of Signatories)
The House of Signatories – one of the most emotionally charged and historically significant places in Lithuanian history – stands on Pilies Street in the heart of the Vilnius Old Town. It was here, on 16 February 1918, that the Council of Lithuania signed the Act of Independence and proclaimed the restoration of the Lithuanian state. 16 February 1918: A Historic Moment The Act of Independence was signed in the hall of this very building – its text was formulated and signed by 20 members of the Council of Lithuania. The Act became the legal foundation for the restoration of Lithuanian statehood after long years of foreign rule. It is recognised as one of the most important political acts of the 20th century in Central and Eastern Europe – a symbol of freedom not only for Lithuania but for the entire region. Museum Exhibition The museum operating in the building today allows visitors to step into the very heart of history. The exhibition presents the circumstances surrounding the creation of the Act of Independence, biographies of the Council members, and documents of the period. The authentic signing hall has been preserved as close to its original state as possible – here you can feel the atmosphere in which the decision that changed Lithuania's destiny was made. The museum also offers educational programmes for schools and organised groups. Setting: Pilies Street The building is on Pilies Street – the main tourist artery of the Vilnius Old Town. Within a few minutes' walk: Cathedral Square , the courtyards of Vilnius University , and Daukantas Square with the Presidential Palace. The House of Signatories is a natural stop on any Old Town itinerary. Practical Information The museum is open daily except Mondays. Guide services and an audio guide are available in several languages. Entry fee is modest; discounts apply for schools.
