Paupys: Vilnius' Abandoned Quarter Transformed

By VisitVilnius editorial4 min read

Paupys, where Vilnius' history meets modern rhythm, is a city quarter transformed. Once an industrial area, it now pulsates with energy, attracting visitors with its unique atmosphere and gastronomy.

Paupys: Where Vilnius' History Meets Modern Rhythm

Vilnius is a city full of unexpected contrasts, where medieval streets lead to modern glass buildings, and the calm flow of the river reflects the bustling city life. One of the most striking examples of such a transformation is Paupys. Once a forgotten industrial backwater, today it pulsates with energy, attracting residents and city guests with its unique atmosphere, gastronomic discoveries, and proximity to nature in the very heart of the capital.

What Paupys Was

The name itself, Paupys, reveals the essence of this place: it is an area "by the river." However, for decades, this bend of the Vilnelė river, nestled between the Old Town and bohemian Užupis, was almost invisible. During the Soviet era, an industrial landscape dominated here: gloomy warehouses, small factories, and abandoned territories. It was a functional, yet completely unattractive part of the city that most people simply bypassed. No one would have thought that this gray zone would soon become one of Vilnius' most fashionable and vibrant quarters.

The Great Transformation

Everything changed in the second decade of the 21st century. Between 2015 and 2022, an ambitious Paupys revitalization project began, initiated by private investors such as "Hanner." This was not just construction, it was a vision to create a harmonious, multifunctional district combining residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. Over seven years, the abandoned industrial area transformed into a true Vilnius gentrification success story, an example of how respect for history and bold modern solutions can bring a forgotten part of the city back to life.

Paupys Market, The Modern Heart of the Quarter

The most prominent symbol of the new Paupys is the Paupys Market, which opened its doors in 2021. It is not just a market, but a true mecca of gastronomy and social life. Designed by architect Audrius Ambrasas and "Plazma" studio, the 2000 sq. meter space under an impressive glass roof has become a center of attraction. More than 20 different restaurants and bars are located here under one roof, offering a journey through world cuisines, from Asian-inspired dishes to Italian pizza or modern Lithuanian cuisine. The space is adorned with an impressive mural by artist Jurgis Tarabilda, and greenery is provided by a unique winter garden where over 1300 plants grow. On weekends, a farmers' market buzzes here, where you can buy the freshest local products. Paupys Market is living proof of how a 2 million euro investment can create not only a dining space but also a pulsating heart for the entire quarter.

Architecture and the Riverfront

Walking through Paupys, it is impossible not to notice the unique architectural harmony. The quarter's creators managed to preserve the industrial heritage, subtly integrating it into a modern aesthetic. Red brick facades recall former factories, but they are complemented by huge glass windows, metal structures, and contemporary forms. However, Paupys is not just about buildings. Great attention has been paid to the Vilnelė riverfront. The previously inaccessible river embankment has been transformed into a cozy public space with green paths, modern bridges, and recreation areas right by the water. Here you can sit on a bench, listen to the river's murmur, and briefly forget that you are just a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of the Old Town.

Paupys Today: Where Vilnius Residents and City Guests Meet

Today, Paupys is one of Vilnius' most vibrant spots. It is a modern quarter of bars, cozy cafes, and gourmet discoveries. Here you can start your morning with a cup of quality coffee, spend the day exploring design shops or working in co-working spaces, and end the evening in a stylish bar or one of the many restaurants. Paupys has become a place where everyone meets: local residents enjoy the benefits of their neighborhood, while city guests discover a new, dynamic, and incredibly attractive face of Vilnius.
