Vilnius Old Town Walking Tour: The Best Self-Guided Route (2026)

4 min read

A self-guided walking tour of Vilnius Old Town — covering 15 must-see stops in the largest baroque old town in Northern Europe. With map, timings, and tips.

Vilnius Old Town: What Makes It Special

The Vilnius Old Town (Senamiestis) is the largest surviving baroque old town in Northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Over 1,500 buildings from the 14th–18th centuries are packed into roughly 360 hectares — enough to spend a full day exploring without seeing the same street twice.

This self-guided walking tour covers the 15 unmissable stops, takes approximately 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace, and covers around 4km of walking.

The Route: 15 Stops

Stop 1: Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė)

Start at the neoclassical Cathedral — the spiritual heart of Lithuania. Look for the magical tile (stebuklas) embedded in the square pavement in front of the Cathedral: stand on it, spin three times clockwise, and make a wish. The adjacent Bell Tower (separate entrance, €3) offers good views over the square.

Allow: 15–20 minutes

Stop 2: Gediminas Castle Hill

Walk up the funicular (€2 one-way) or climb the steps (10 min) to the top for panoramic views. The red-brick tower is the symbol of the city. Open daily 10:00–20:00 (summer), 10:00–17:00 (winter). Entry: €5 (includes the small museum inside).

Allow: 30–45 minutes

Stop 3: National Museum of Lithuania

At the foot of the castle hill, this museum gives essential historical context for everything you'll see on the walk. The permanent collection covers Lithuanian history from the Stone Age to the present. Entry: €5.

Allow: 45–60 minutes (or skip if pressed for time)

Stop 4: Pilies Street

The main artery of the Old Town, running south from Cathedral Square. Lined with medieval buildings, amber shops, cafés, and street musicians. Walk it slowly — look up at the facades and into the courtyards.

Allow: 15 minutes walking

Stop 5: Vilnius University Courtyard

Turn right off Pilies Street through the university gate. The 13 interconnected courtyards are one of the most beautiful (and most overlooked) spaces in Vilnius. The main courtyard has a stunning sundial. Free entry during opening hours.

Allow: 15–20 minutes

Stop 6: St. John's Church

Inside the university complex: a magnificent late Gothic church with a towering baroque bell tower (the tallest in Vilnius). The interior has elaborate wooden altars. Free entry.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 7: Town Hall Square (Rotušės aikštė)

The historical marketplace of Vilnius, now surrounded by restaurants and the neoclassical Town Hall. The square hosts the Christmas Market in December and various festivals throughout summer.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 8: St. Casimir's Church

The first baroque church in Vilnius (early 17th century), with a distinctive crown-topped dome. The interior is richly decorated. Free entry.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 9: Gates of Dawn (Aušros Vartai)

The only surviving gate of the original city wall, containing the Chapel of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn — one of the most venerated religious sites in Lithuania and Poland. The miraculous Madonna icon is said to grant wishes. Free entry; dress modestly.

Allow: 15 minutes

Stop 10: St. Teresa's Church

Adjacent to the Gates of Dawn: an early baroque church with one of the most ornate interiors in the Old Town. The combination of white marble, gilded altars, and ceiling frescoes is extraordinary.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 11: Basilian Gate & Monastery

A baroque arch leads to a complex where Adam Mickiewicz (Poland's greatest Romantic poet) was once imprisoned. The arch itself is one of the most photographed spots in Vilnius.

Allow: 5 minutes

Stop 12: Uzupis Bridge & Bohemian District

Cross the small bridge over the Vilnelė to enter Užupis — the artists' republic. Read the Constitution on the mirrored plaques. Walk to the Angel statue. Browse galleries. More about Užupis →

Allow: 45–60 minutes

Stop 13: St. Anne's Church

Returning from Užupis, stop at the stunning Flamboyant Gothic church that Napoleon wanted to take back to Paris. Built entirely in brick in 33 different patterns. Best photographed in the late afternoon light.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 14: Bernardine Church & Garden

Next to St. Anne's: a late Gothic church with a beautiful garden running alongside the Vilnelė river. The garden is a popular spot for locals and a quiet escape from the tourist crowds.

Allow: 15 minutes

Stop 15: St. Peter and St. Paul's Church

A short walk north from the Old Town, this baroque masterpiece contains over 2,000 white plaster sculptures covering every surface. One of the most extraordinary church interiors in Europe. Free entry.

Allow: 20–30 minutes

Practical Tips for the Walk

  • Best time: Weekday mornings to avoid crowds; golden hour (7–9am) for empty streets and great photos
  • Footwear: Cobblestones are uneven — wear comfortable shoes
  • Café breaks: Cozy (Dominikonų 10), Skonis ir Kvapas (Trakų 8), or any courtyard café on Pilies
  • Free toilets: In McDonald's on Vokiečių Street or the Akropolis shopping centre nearby
  • Duration: Full route takes 3–4 hours; stops 1–9 alone make a good 2-hour version
