In Vilnius, you can launch a canoe or kayak directly in the city, without any travel outside its borders. Two rivers of different character flow through the capital: the calm and wide Neris, and the much faster, winding Vilnelė. Neris River: A Calm Start in the City
The Neris flows slowly and widely through Vilnius, so most city rental points recommend this river for beginners, families, and groups where not everyone has paddled before. The most popular route starts at Verkių Mill, near Verkiai Manor and the regional park, and ends at the White Bridge in Žvėrynas, after paddling about 10-15 km in 2-3 hours. Vilnelė: Faster Current Through Užupis
The Vilnelė is a completely different river: narrower, winding, with a faster current, fallen trees, and shallows. Trakai: Paddling Around the Island Castle
Trakai is not in Vilnius, but it's only about 28 km away, so most capital kayak renters also offer this one-day trip. Practical Tips for Paddlers
- Season: Most operators work from May to the end of September. For the hottest part of summer, June and August, book at least a few days in advance, especially for weekends.
- Experience: For the Neris and Lake Galvė in Trakai, no prior paddling experience is needed. Instructors always provide a brief instruction before starting. For the Vilnelė, at least minimal experience or good physical fitness would be beneficial.
- Children: Most renters have child-sized life vests and seats that attach in the middle of a double kayak or canoe. With small children, choose the Neris or Trakai, not the Vilnelė.

The 2026 season route connects the Business Triangle in Žvėrynas and Žirmūnai beach, a total of 7.9 km, stopping at the Žvėrynas, White, Green, Mindaugas, and Šilas bridges. The boats "Rytas", "Lašiša", "Geležinis vilkas", and "Smilga" run every 30-35 minutes. A 90-minute ticket in the electronic system costs 3 Eur, buying on the boat costs 4 Eur, a family ticket for up to 5 people costs 7 Eur. This is not kayaking, but a convenient and cheap way to see the same bridges and embankments from the water if paddling isn't for you or you simply want to cross the city by river.
